The Housatonic was a fleet oiler that began her career refueling ships in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean. She transferred over to the South Pacific in 1944 and served ships participating in the invasions of Luzon, Iwo Jima and Guadalcanal.

The image on this Christmas postcard was created by Disney artist Hank Porter in 1943.

There is a river in Connecticut called HOUSATONIC (American Indian name): could this ship be named after that river?

Hello Bob.

Yes, the Housatonic was named after that river. I think all the WW II fleet oilers were named after rivers because two others with Disney insignia that I have researched, the Escambia and Winooski, are also named for rivers. The Escambia flows through Georgia and Florida, while the Winooski flows through Vermont to Lake Champlain.
