Guest Stealthrt Posted December 8, 2007 Share #1 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi all, I'm looking for some advice on a letter I found among many letters my Dad wrote to his Mother during his time in the USMC. My Dad served with the 5th marine div. 28th regiment and fought on Iwo Jima. I found one letter written on Red Cross stationaryand he wrote Iwo Jima at the right side with the date March 24, 1945. In the letter he describes the raising of the flag on Suribachi, the close calls he had and how he felt it was safe to write to his Mother at this point. Is something of this nature rare? I was thinking of putting it on Ebay but would like some opinions on this letter. It is three pages and with the envelope. The letter is in almost pristine condition but the envelope is quite aged and worn. Should I put it on Ebay? I have put other things on there and have an excellent rating, well I would appreciate any help and advice. Thanks, Stealthrt

R Michael Posted December 8, 2007 Share #4 Posted December 8, 2007 I know it is your property but I really think you would regret selling it. Of course if you are dead set on selling it go ahead, as you know one can sell most anything. By the way did he have a photo album? If so I would be greatly interested in you posting a few photos. teufelhunde.ret Posted December 8, 2007 Share #5 Posted December 8, 2007 Quite frankly, I think your family will be best served by keeping it as it will be a cherished memento for the ages. s/f Darrell

Surely, there's some family member who would treasure it. Greg

Guest Stealthrt Posted December 8, 2007 Share #8 Posted December 8, 2007 Hi, I really appreciate the feeback on the letter and what to do with it or not to do with it. The only person in my family who would cherish the letter was my brother who passed away in 1999, he was the history buff. So, I'm still not sure on what to do with it? I could use the money to help out my Mom but I agree also with keeping it. It's a difficult decision for me. Thanks again, Stealthrt
Brian Keith Posted December 9, 2007 Share #9 Posted December 9, 2007 "My Dad served with the 5th marine div. 28th regiment and fought on Iwo Jima. I am associated with a Veterans History museum that has the artifacts and uniforms of the Red Cross representative for the 28th Marines, 5th Marine Division, while they were on Iwo. That Red Cross stationary probably came from John Jaqua, of Portland, IN. Jaqua was a board member of the Museum of the Soldier, Inc. when he passed away a few years ago. We have his artifacts on exhibit. If possible, we would like a photo copy of the letter for our archives. BKW
KASTAUFFER Posted December 9, 2007 Share #10 Posted December 9, 2007 I buy and sell a lot of letters on Ebay . Iwo letters are desirable, but you will not get rich from selling it. My guess is $50-100 tops . Believe it or not a lot of the value has to do with the condition of the envelope . You should keep it in your family.
