Kurt Barickman Posted November 21, 2011 Author Share #12 Posted November 21, 2011 Dean received a battlefield commission out of Guadalcanal and landed on Tarawa as did the rest of 1-8 on the morning of the second day. He was wounded in the water as the tractors were gone for the most part by the second day and the Higgins boats dropped off the men on the edge of the reef and had to wade in and suffered terrible casualties. Dean was saved that day by two Minnesotans. Eddie Heimberger aka Eddie Albert was a USN officer taking wounded back to hospital ships and picked Dean up and took him to a hospital ship where a Mayo Clinic surgeon was attending him which saved him from his severe stomach wound.
