tarbridge Posted October 28, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 28, 2011 MM1c Charles R.Fagg USS Pensacola KIA:30,Nov.1942 at The Battle of Tassfaronga From:Knightsville,Indiana The USS Pensacola was a heavy crusier that earned 13 battle stars for its Wartime service.The crusier screened the carriers Lexington and Yorktown during there operations in the southern pacific from Feb.into April 1942.In the Battle of Midway,Pensacola escorted both USS Enterprise and USS Yorktown.From August to December 1942,she operated in support of the Guadalcanal campaign,mainly serving with aircraft carriers,and was present during the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands in late October and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal in mid-November.At the end of November,Pensacola was badly damaged by a torpedo in the Battle of Tassfaronga,with the loss of about 120 of her crew.MM1c Charles Fagg was one of these crewman on that fateful day. The Pensacola was repaired and finished the War as a fighting ship.She helped in Occupation duty and also bring home Pacific veterans home as part of Operation"Magic Carpet".In 1946 the crusier was assigned to target duty with atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll.Badly damaged by two explosions,she was decommissioned in August 1946.On 10 November 1948 she was sunk as a target in fleet exercises off the coast of Washington State.
