Wailuna Posted November 26, 2007 Share #1 Posted November 26, 2007 U.S. Army Pacific (USARPAC) Rifle Team, Ft. Shafter, T.H. The picture was taken during competition at Schofield Barracks, July 8, 1948. Front Row (left to right): Lt. Russel Spillman, Capt. W.S. Brooks, and M/Sgt. Jimmy Allen. Back Row: Capt. Dale Frazer, Capt. Herbert Batz, and M/Sgt. Howard F. Mollay. Note: The man behind the camera was T/3 Al Chang, r.i.p.
Charlie Flick Posted November 26, 2007 Share #2 Posted November 26, 2007 W: Thanks for posting that very cool photo. It is interesting that everyone is shooting the M1 Rifle, and that there are no M1903 Rifles evident. The Springfield was probably limited standard by that time, but back then a lot of guys thought that the accuracy of the M1903 could not be duplicated in the M1. Got any more ARPAC shooting team photos? Charlie Flick

Got any more ARPAC shooting team photos? I thought the same thing and concluded that this particular competition must have been restricted to the service rifle of the day, which was the M1. Here is another: This one was taken at Headquarters, USARPAC, Ft. Shafter, T.H., May 28, 1948. None of the Team are identified on the back, but three of the officers and two of the NCOs appear in both pictures. And the photographer this time is not the renowned Al Chang. Dad, you know that I have the patch that the guys are holding over here and also a bunch of the shooting medals that they wore. Also as a note of interest: the entrance that these shooters are standing in front of is a work of art and each of the grill frames have Divisional insignia in them. I've only seen it once with Marty when we were doing research up there but it might be neat to get a current image of that entry and post it together in this post. I think I have another photo here slightly different than the one above I believe the guys were not holding the patch. JR
Wailuna Posted January 7, 2008 Author Share #6 Posted January 7, 2008 Here is a long shot of the front of Headquarters USARPAC taken in August, 1952, a couple of years after the Team photo shown above. Kiaiokalewa is correct about the artwork on the front of the building, although this picture still does not do it justice. Next time I am over that way, I'll see if the MPs will let me take a close up.
