Some Hollywood helmets

Was watching Escape from the Planet of the Apes last night, and noticed in the beginning, all of the Marines are wearing 1st pattern helmet covers.

Most of the helmets appear to be swivel loop (there could be a fixed loop or two in the mix), with sewn straps. More than likely, these were all surplus in a prop department, and are now sought after by collectors. Funny when you think about it.

Movie was released in 1971, however takes place in 1973.

back in 1973 the old USMC camo helmet covers didnt seem so old or outdated yet, just s few years earlier some of the Marines in Vietnam were still wearing older camo helmet covers like that.

that would be similar to showing a soldier with the old Desert Storm "Choc Chip" camo cover on a helmet, it would look outdated but not that bad, because most people remember it like it was yesterday.

I couldn't agree more, BOLO, regarding USMC camo covers being worn by Marines in Vietnam at the time. Every Marine in this movie was wearing one, though.

I assume they (they being the prop department) didn't outfit the Marines in Mitchell covers due to the fact they weren't as readily available. Movie was released May 21, 1971, so you assume production took place towards the end of 1970 - early 1971, when # of US troop in Vietnam was relatively high at around 430K.

For a low budget film, I imagine it was easier/more cost effective for the prop department to obtain surplus WWII covers, compared to relatively new Mitchell covers.

Gomer Pyle often wore the older style camo helmet cover, and this was the USMC in the late 1960's, and some of them had the Mitchell pattern covers.

Bolo, what movie is that from?

I watched when trumpets fade last night and the helmets were surprisingly good, especially all the higher ranking officers helmets.

Awesome thanks!!

So, to test your knowledge (although we'll never truly know), what year do you think the Mitchell cover in the still is from? Thinking 1959?

I always wanted a helmet like the guy wore in the tv show "GOMER PYLE USMC" I thought that camo cover that fits like a glove was really cool, I finally have a helmet like it in my collection, but with a repro cover.

Sgt Carter was my favorite, he was Gung Ho, and funny

The beach scenes are both filmed at Zuma Beach in Malibu, Ca

remember the ending scene in the first Planet of the Apes with the statue of Liberty? thats the same beach the Marines are standing in Escape from the Planet of the Apes.

I'm not savvy enough to post a photo from a video but I was just watching the movie Hatari. In the scene where Red Buttons shoots a rocket dragging a net over a tree full of monkeys there is a WWI German Helmet on one of the people who go into the tree to catch the monkeys. Not a big deal but another helmet in the movies.

Burning Hazard

The Notebook (2004) had a brief WW2 scene set in Battle of the Bulge; looks like they used SB helmets with OD3 chinstraps and shrimp nets? Still pretty well done for such a brief scene.

What, you mean we can't trust a seller's description of an item on ebay? What's the world coming to...

I wondered about that myself, I have not seen "Wake Island" in decades.

I know this is a helmet thread but you guys are missing the coolest thing about this picture. The second jeep from the left is an M422 "Mighty Mite", one of only 3922 made for the Marines! They were a special light-weight, mostly aluminum jeep with an air-cooled, V4 aluminum engine. Way back when I was in high school & college in the 70's, I had two of them. Mine were actually M422A1's, six inches longer than the M422's. I always look for them movies and every now and then one shows up.

I've clicked on several of the real good close up images and not seeing that rivet either on any of them. The helmet sure does look like a prop, if used in Wake Island movie, maybe then one not worn by the principle actors?

I think its just an aluminum private purchase parade helnet...mike

That's a good call dorango, we can see a silvery underside where the paint ends in the dome area.
