Bob M Posted October 13, 2011 Share #1 Posted October 13, 2011 Bought these Shoes, Service, Hob-Nail. In my honest opinion they look original to me, but these days you can't be sure enough. So, please give me your honest opinions  Also, is there any knowledge about what units wore this type of boots? Thanks, Bob
capa Posted October 13, 2011 Share #2 Posted October 13, 2011 Wow, Bob those are great. I am no expert, but I have seen a photo of US troops on Utah beach wearing them (the photo shows them in the sitting firing position in the dunes). So I would say combat troops. Nothing sounds like hobnail boots marching on pavement!

Sabrejet Posted October 13, 2011 Share #4 Posted October 13, 2011 They get the thumbs up from me. Quality boots like this would be way too expensive to reproduce...and they'd need a silly price tag to cover the costs. Great find!

Sabrejet Posted October 13, 2011 Share #7 Posted October 13, 2011 I recall reading an interesting memoir about the pre D-Day build up along Britain's south coast. The writer said that they always knew if either British or American troops were marching by, even if they couldn't see them. The British troops made a sharp, rhythmic cadence because of their hobnail boots, whilst the "Yanks" made a "dull thud" due to their rubber-soled boots! Bob M Posted October 13, 2011 Author Share #9 Posted October 13, 2011 I believe that shoe is a slightly different model: Shoes, Service, Reverse Upper, Hob Riveted. Correct me if I'am wrong.

Thanks, Bob Very nice, plus their in the more larger size of 9 1/2, all the boots that I have seen from WWII tend to be smaller sizes.

capa Posted October 15, 2011 Share #12 Posted October 15, 2011 Hey Bob, Found the book this morning. I can't tell from the photo if these are the rough out or service shoe like what you have. But, it does show these were used by US troops. I think the photo was reversed when they printed the book, however. I would be surprised to ever see three men who shoot lefty in one photo. PFC Red Posted June 30, 2015 Share #15 Posted June 30, 2015 Sharing a pic, which shows infantrymen belonging to the 38th ID on Leyte, Oct. 1944. The one on the extreme left is wearing a pair of hobnailed boots. Picture is taken from "The Pacific War" by A. Wiest and L. Mattson.
thunderw21 Posted July 8, 2015 Share #16 Posted July 8, 2015 Here's a pair I own. They were worn by an officer in Italy. Service shoes converted to double-buckle configuration.
PFC Red Posted July 9, 2015 Share #17 Posted July 9, 2015 Very neat! Conversione from Service to double buckle (but in this case hobnailed!) was done very often in the Italian theater, if I'm not mistaken
