146th New York Ribbon

This is an interesting piece! Years ago, I used to collect Civil War regimental histories. Before I sold them, I had assembled a collection of 63 regimentals, including the regimental for "Berdan's Sharpshooters" - which I regret terribly for selling. I kept a few, including the regimental history of the 146th New York Infantry. I had three ancestors that served in that regiment. These two little momento's were found inside that book. The ribbon looks like it was made yesterday - it's as mint as you can get. The little pamphlet was also in the book. If people are interested in Civil War regimentals, I can post my first additions. As many as I had, these books are considered rare. Enjoy.

I would love to see some pictures of your regimental collection, as I collect regimental histories as well. I have also written one regimental history on the 38th Mississippi Infantry - I had relatives in the unit, there was no history written on the unit, so I solved the problem by writing it myself.

Champion,

I will see about posting the few regimentals that I still have. They are boxed away with my diaries, etc. I keep them that way to prevent shelf wear and other kinds of damage. I have the regimental for the 117th New York, my copy having belonged to a black body servant who served with Colonel Pease. Give me a day or so to locate the box. (Half of my inventory is boxed away, just too much stuff!!)

I also wanted to comment on the regimental history work that you had accomplished. My hats off to you, sir, just not that many people are willing to undertake such an endeavor. I have a pair of Civil War regulation socks, that belonged to 1st Lt. Augustine Clough, of the 13th Maine Infantry. These socks were suppose to appear in a regimental history that a man was working on, but he never got back to me. I suspect that it still has not been completed.

I wonder if there would be much of an interest on the forum in the light of socks?? Civil War socks are EXTREMELY RARE. A very prominant CW dealer had informed me that there is perhaps a hand full in existance. These are the regulation socks, not a home made pair sent to the front. The socks, along with a very old, typed identification were purchased from a home in Rome, New York. Such were the days when Civil War stuff could still come out of the wood work!! I purchase an untold amount of militaria every year, and something from the Civil War hasn't come out of the wood work in a number of years. OK, I've rambled enough..

Chris -

Very nice! That ribbon and pamphlet are fantastic!

I thought you might get a kick out of a picture of a ladder badge from the 146th New York. I've been meaning to post something for awhile - I just haven't had time to photograph it!

One of the best groupings in my collection is a set of medals from Isaac M. Foster, Company H, 146th New York Infantry. Foster was actually taken prisoner on May 5, 1864 (Wilderness) and sent to Andersonville Prison. Post-war he was one of only five veterans who were members of the Andersonville Monument Dedication Commission (out of I believe 13 or 14 total members). I've got the book from the monument dedication ceremonies - and he's listed - with his photograph. The grouping includes

  • Andersonville Monument Commissioner's Medal (with the original box, with his name on it!)
  • 1913 Gettysburg reunion medal (w/Andersonville ribbon, I've never seen one of these before!)
  • 1893 Gettysburg New York Day medal
  • POW Medal
  • Ladder badge
  • An oval photograph of him in uniform w/medals
  • and two GAR post badges - Posts No. 7 and No. 327

Here are pics of the grouping, his ladder badge, and the photo of Mr. Foster himself!

One of these days I'd definitely like to find a copy of the 146th Regimental so I can research Mr. Foster and the unit in more detail. I'm actually still researching Foster to add a more complete "resume" to the display.

Now THAT is a spectacular grouping of veteran related material!

Civil War POW items are well out of my league as far as collecting goes. I really appreciate your sharing that photograph with everyone.

Thanks Kevin. It really is a fantastic group and I was very fortunate to be able to STRETCH and pick it up from a long-time source who decided to be VERY VERY kind to me!

You're absolutely right about the POW medals - they have gotten expensive in recent years. I have a few others I picked-up (unidentified) MANY MANY years ago before prices went through the roof - but these days most are out of reach. Even basic POW ribbons have gotten expensive.

While I'm here I'll go ahead and post photos of the POW Medal itself - and the Andersonville Commission medal - from this grouping.

The POW Medal (can't see it clearly in the pic) has a bar with "Andersonville" on it. I've seen others (one in particular recently) that had I think it was six (6) different bars (prisons) listed. Maybe one day.....
