collectsmedals Posted November 7, 2007 Share #3 Posted November 7, 2007 Very nice piece of history. I love the July 12, 1941 date on the postmark.
KASTAUFFER Posted November 7, 2007 Share #4 Posted November 7, 2007 I collect Postal History and you have a nice example. In the 1930's lots of stamp collectors would request souvenir cancels on envelopes by sending self addressed stamped envelopes to the ship's postal clerks. Those are very common. Yours is nice because it is from the Marine himself and not one cancelled for a collector. Mail from the actual ships crew is always better! Kurt Thanks everyone, I blurred the names just in case but I can tell you I have done some research on the Marine and he was on the Arizona and died on Dec. 7th. He is shown as being Missing in Action at or about 8:15 am. It is my belief, although it will never be proven that he died when the Arizona's forward magazine exploded. siege1863 Posted November 10, 2007 Share #6 Posted November 10, 2007 This post reminded me of a cover I have in my collection. The letter we sent by a sailor named H.A. Slusser. I have yet to fully identify him. I know he served aboard the USS DENVER as an Electrician's Mate in 1943 and 1944. I wonder if he was on duty on the morning of the attack! I have another cover dated December 3rd.
