dutchbarge Posted August 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted August 12, 2011 Hello, Having just re-read the Uniform Regulations, US Marine Corps, 1922, I can find no mention of overseas service chevrons. Was this an oversight on my part or was the wearing of os chevrons discontinued by the 1922 Regs? Also, I could find no mention of SSI. At what point in time did serving AEF Marine Corps veterans stop wearing their AEF SSI? Last, am I correct to assume officers wore no long service chevrons? Thanks, Bill
Justin B. Posted August 12, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 12, 2011 Hello, Having just re-read the Uniform Regulations, US Marine Corps, 1922, I can find no mention of overseas service chevrons. Was this an oversight on my part or was the wearing of os chevrons discontinued by the 1922 Regs? Yes, discontinued. See the Letter of Transmittal at the beginning of the Regs: Headquarters U. S. Marine Corps, WASHINGTON, September 11, 1922. [...] 32. War-service chevrons are no longer regulation in the Marine Corps, as the service represented is indicated by clasps on the Victory medal, and by bronze stars or the Maltese cross on the Victory ribbon, medals or ribbons being prescribed at all times except when in the field. Also, I could find no mention of SSI. At what point in time did serving AEF Marine Corps veterans stop wearing their AEF SSI? Last, am I correct to assume officers wore no long service chevrons? Thanks, Bill I am not sure but I believe the SSI were theater-authorized only, once a unit was out of the AEF they removed the SSI. No long service chevrons for officers, but they did wear wound and overseas service chevrons while authorized. Best regards, Justin B.

dutchbarge Posted August 23, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted August 23, 2011 I am not sure but I believe the SSI were theater-authorized only, once a unit was out of the AEF they removed the SSI. Best regards, Justin B. I suppose that would have occured for the 4th Brigade when they transfered from the 2nd Division back to the US Navy 8 August 1919, although I seem to recall the 4th Brigade wearing AEF SSI when they were reviewed by General Neville 12 August 1919. So perhaps there was some carry over. Cheers, Bill
War Party Posted June 22, 2017 Share #5 Posted June 22, 2017 Was the Victory Medal w/Maltese Cross device given to all AEF Marines, or only those who did not rate a battle clasp? References?
warguy Posted June 22, 2017 Share #6 Posted June 22, 2017 The Maltese cross was issued on the Victory medal to those Marines who served in France but didn't rate a battle clasp, specifically members of the 5th Marine Brigade, the 13th and 11th Marines.
