Third Division recruit drill? Date and place of this scene are unknown but the Golden Gate International Exposition of 1939-1940 is one possibility. Third Division posted a provisional company from 30th Infantry (“San Francisco’s Own”) at the Exposition venue on Treasure Island in San Francisco Bay in 1939, where it was billeted at Camp Hunter Liggett (perhaps the tents shown behind the corporal). The “Treasure Island Company” in 1940 included troops from other Ninth Corps units as well as from 30th Infantry. The 1935-1936 California Pacific Exposition in San Diego is another possibility. Third Division sent a unit of some 164 30th Infantry soldiers and bandsmen to this event. (Thanks to Forum member Gregory who originally posted this image elsewhere on the Forum).

These two are from Seanmc1114's post in Patches in Action, they are from 1931, three Reserve Officers wearing their Divisional Shoulder Patches.

The 78th Division, unknown Regiment, this Division was out of New Jersey.

104th Division, by the look of the DIs possibly the 415th Infantry, or the 413th, hard to tell, may be a case of color distortion, the comman effect in these old photos. this Division in the pre WWII period was out of Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Montana.

Going though this topic I noticed the flag with the 17th Inf's crest on it, the photo Wailuna originally posted, and it occured to me that this is not a Regimental Color as it lacks the Eagle background, what would this flag be? Was this a post WWI pre WWII version of a Battalion Flag?

That is a reasonable WAG, patches, and the flag's presence with B Company might have had something to do with the sporting trophies on display: 1st Battalion champs?

17th Infantry was assigned to 6th Division from August 15, 1927, until October 1, 1933. Regimental Headquarters and 1st Battalion were stationed at Ft. Crook the entire time 17th Inf. was assigned to 6th Division.

Right, Wailuna, also again we see the 20s 30s and earlier large sized Guidon, we seen this one earlier in that 16th Infantry unit marching at Fort Jay, Governers Island, but unlike B Co 17th Infantry, B Co 16th Infantry has either White fringe or a White border.

Here is a photo I had posted in the reference section years ago but has relevance here. This is a shoulder cut off of a badly mothed tailored uniform with a dated 1937 tag from a tailor in Baltimore. You can see exactly the type of 1st Infantry Division patch they were wearing at that point.

Uniform I recently had the opportunity to add to my collection. It is a stand up collar converted to the M1926 and features a beautiful woolen 83rd Infantry Division patch.

An interwar Engineer officer of the 102nd Division,, more than likely of the division's 327th Engineer Regiment.

Brigadier General George Columbus Barnhardt wearing the first style SSI approved for the Hawaiian Division in 1921 before being redesignated for the 24th Infantry Division during World War II. This would be sometime in the 1920s as the general died in 1930.
