BEAST Posted October 22, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 22, 2007 Maybe this should have been posted in the photo section, but I thought the overcoat worn by the chaplain warranted its display here. This is from a photo in my collection of 42nd Division soldiers taken after the end of the war, before they came home. I have never seen a chaplain's overcoat with this insignia before. If any of you have one on your collection, I would appreciate it if you would show it.

Chap15 Posted October 22, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 22, 2007 Interesting note that Chaplains at first did not have rank, then as the war went on, they had rank. Chaplains in DC didn't want them to have rank, but those in Europe did. After the war, it went back and forth but then they went with the rank. By WWII Chaplains had rank. But on the overseas cap, they wore the cross, but then the rank. I have a overseas cap I got from a CH Vet and he left his cross on the cap. Even when we wore the overseas cap, we had to wear the rank. But on the patrol cap we wore the cross. Now the ugly beret, we wear the cross. BTW, I wrote a paper that chaplains shouldn't have rank.
