I recently acquired a dogtag named to William Tuthill Hewitt ... and found a corporal, same name, US Marine Corps, born 12/24/1922 and buried at the Bushnell National Cemetery, Florida

I guess there's a good probability that it's the same marine but if someone has access to the USMC muster rolls, I'd be glad to have some additionnal informations  ... thanks in advance.

Etienne,

This is pretty crazy but WIlliam Tuthill Hewitt is my dad. As Squad Leader mentioned he passed away in 2004 as I was in the process of moving him down closer to me here in Palm City, Fl. What information were you interested in about him? I can tell you what I know but I still have alot of papers and records, including his military papers and patches that I have put away and have not spread them out and tried to understand details of his time in the service. He didn't tell me alot so I am curious of where he traveled during his service. I remember him talking about Guadacanal and New Zealand. My obvious question is where did you find it or where did you aquire it from? Are you in France?

There looks like two WIlliam T Hewitt, one which was in the 21st Marines 3rd Marine Division in the weapons company. The other seems to be stateside but neither seem to have their service number to compare to. I'm on my cellphone so can somebody else double check?

Hello Scott,

I'm in France, you are right B)

As always when I find some dogtags or personel items, I try to find informations about the marine, which unit he belonged to, where he was, when and what for ... it's nice to have a contact with a next of kin B)

Concerning the tag, if I remember well ... i had it in a trade on a french forum, but I don't really know how it came to France

Let's keep in touch,

Etienne

Hello Leonardo,

considering the SN on the tags, W.T.Hewitt was in the Wpns CO of the 21st Marines, no doubt ;)

Love the original leather thong. Sure beats half of ebay's "USMC WWII DOG TAG W/ ORIGINAL CORD L@@@@@k ULTRA-RARE!!!" and it ends up being a bootstring from their latest pair of walmart workboots.

I know what you mean ;)

For the short story, William T.Hewitt enlisted in 1942 and was a member of the Weapons Co. of the 21st Marines.

He is on the muster roll of this unit until october 1944 then nothing and he reappears stateside in USNH (Navy hospital) then USNCH (Navy convalescent hospital) ... seems like he was wounded, but no more informations about that.

Wow. I can take a snap shot of his grave if you like. I live 5 min from the cemetery.

I think Scott is first concerned ... wait to know what he thinks about that B)

Wow!, Thank you all for all of this information. I need to save some of this military data for myself and my daughter. He never spoke about his injuries. The comment about Guam refreshes my memory of him mentioning Guam. As far as a picture of his and my step-mom's burial site would not be a problem, but thank you both for considering before posting it. Who would have thought that I would stumble across his dog tag by Googling his name. If a marine looses his dog tag during service, would they have issued another or would this be the only one? I want to pull his discharge papers and verify his SR#. I occasionally Google his name looking for any service or high school buddies looking for him or any other information I can find. In the past year I have been working on Ancestry.com and building a family tree. I have not attached any military records to it ...yet. The information you all have found, is that available to myself also or do you need to be a current of former marine? I will be pulling out his envelope I have of his service items and papers to see if there is any other records I overlooked. The WIA is very interesting! I may have some questions about some of his military patches I have now that I have you as a resource.

Thanks again

Scott

Post the patches if you are able. There is a very deep collective of knowledge here and Im sure you will be able to get many answers.

Also there are members here who can get you his service records in a timely manner for a fee. These professional researchers do very good work and I have used a couple myself. One with the record of a family member who served in the Marines. You dont have to be a former Marine or service member to get the records.Just works quicker to have a researcher do it.

Good luck

Scott,

It's an exception if the records do not come his ID picture so most likely there is a picture of your Dad you've never seen sitting in his paperwork in the archives. I suggest Golden Arrow research, he charges about $75 to pull a USMC record but you can be assured he will find most everything with your dad's name on it.

Guam was a terrible battle for the Third Division, I collect Iwo Jima USMC jackets and most that have picked up are WIA in Guam and never made it to Iwo Jima like your father. I could understand why he wouldn't talk about it. You might want to pick up the 3rd Division Book as you have a good idea what your father experienced.

There is also a listing on Find A Grave:

...and finally..... I thank your Father for his service!

your father's name appears on many muster rolls of the 21st Marines on Ancestry.com ... you should be able to get them ;)

I'll second that ... Geoff did a great job for me in the past.

I was planning to ask him to search about W.T.Hewitt in 2013, and other marines as well.

Etienne,

Sorry for not responding sooner. I have been busy getting ready for the holidays. These pics of the muster rolls are great!. I am putting together a book about my dad's time in the service for my daughter. I will include the muster roll pics. I have been adding to this book with information and service items from my dad and an explanation of what the items represent.

I see you are a collector of military clothes. Since I do not have any of those items are there any other types of items I may be able to offer you in trade for my dad's dogtag? It would make a nice addition to my items that I have of his.
