Fox Posted October 20, 2007 Share #1 Posted October 20, 2007 I would like to tell you a little story. My grandfather has been talking about a home-made dagger of his own for months but he definitely couldn't find it out among his stuff... Yesterday, he said 'Come on and have a look, I've just found something I've been looking for for quite a long time...' I followed him in his shed and there he took out quite an amazing little knife in general good shape despite the rusty blade. Then he told me the story of this funny item once again : at the end of WWII, my grandfather, who was about 18 years old, used to go to the movie theatre the Americans had set up in the village with some friends of his. The problem was that some German POWs were often walking around in the area, looking for French girls to meet during their free time. My grandfather and his gang got fed up with this annoying guys and decided to take a dagger when going out at night -- just 'in case'... They took what I think to be a M1 bayonet and just kept a piece of the blade to make their own little dagger. They also made a little scabbard from the US scabbard. Thus, my grandfather was reassured when going out with his bunch! I was very proud to receive it from him, for this knife is both a historical item and a family souvenir. I immediatly cleaned it out and the dagger is now in my display cabinet with other stuff my grandfather gave me. This is a relic.
Spathologist Posted October 20, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 20, 2007 What's the width of the blade? Looks like it might be made from the pointy end of a M1913 saber...

Fox Posted October 21, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted October 21, 2007 My grandfather never talked about a saber or whatever. I've always been told he made it from a US bayonet (M 1942 or M 1). Anyway, it may not be esthetical but I'm really glad I got this amazing dagger -- the tiny scabbard looks funny, too.
