If anyone has a spare 1K laying around I've found just the book for you. It's a copy of John Lejeune's memoirs that was dedicated in pen by the great Marine himself. Seriously though........way overpriced. I'm a huge bibliophile but that is nuts for a book of it's moderate rarity. Oh, and one would think spending that much on a book would get you free shipping!

Just a similar fun story. Many years ago I was at used book store (my poassion pre internet) and saw yet another copy of the ABM guide to WW1 battlefields in Europe. $8. I already had a copy though, but I picked it up for some unknown reason.

Somepoint later I am leafing through it and spy pencil notes in it commenting on a few things- Ah HA! a vet owned book! great. Then I notice most of the comments are about CAntigny (a special interst of mine) Hurrah! and then I finally look at the fornt pages and find it was non other than Hanson Ely's own copy- which had been donated to some Army library- surplussed out, sent to an ROTC library, and eventually sold off as not being needed!

So once ina while it pays to look inside books....

I don't know about that. I sold an autographed copy of sniper Carlos Hathcock's book last year for over $200: I could easily see a collector paying a whole lot more than that for a signed autobiography of a Marine of Lejeune's stature: but I do think I would have set a lower starting price and perhaps had a reserve price rather than just starting at $1,000. Items associated with specific Marines of note are bringing very high prices these days. I've been selling off the contents of the seabag of a Korean War Marine sniper who's in a semi-famous painting and I have put some outrageously high Buy It Now prices on some of his HBT's and have been surprised that people bought them at those prices.

I see nothing wrong with a 1K price tag. Let's face the facts, a thousand dollars is not a lot of money. When you collect militaria outside of the US realm, there really isn't a whole lot that a grand can buy you. Not everyone fusses about prices - to many, the price is not an issue. At the last MAX show, Russian collectors were shelling out five and six figures for exceptional pieces without even "haggling" a price. I'd say that the book is worth anywhere between $750-$1,200 ----> He should have started the bidding lower. Once a bidding war begins, the sky is the limit.
