Theorywolf Posted May 7, 2011 Share #1 Posted May 7, 2011 I just got this one recently. It is named to William P. Rooney. PFC Rooney was a member of the sixth Marine Division, 22nd Regiment. You will notice on the front of the scabbard the names of the Islands where the 6th trained and fought at Okinawa. The 22nd also had fighting experience at Guam and the Marshalls before joining the sixth. They were the only Marine division that was formed outside the U.S. and disbanded outside the U.S. They also are known for only one battle, Okinawa, like the 5th Marines at Iwo Jima. The president of the sixth Association also told me that the Division planted the last flag in the last battle of the war. I had the good fortune of contacting the president of the 6th Marine Association. He was able to find a PFC William P. Rooney who was wounded on Okinawa. I am contacting the Marine Archives in Virginia for his wound record. He was from New York and passed away in 1999. The Ka-Bar has the USMC on one side and Ka-Bar on the other. Nice parkerization. There is black paint left on the butt and I don't know if this was factory done or applied by the vet. Super proud to own this one! Cheers, Mike

tsellati Posted May 7, 2011 Share #10 Posted May 7, 2011 Congratulations on an excellent addition to the collection. I especially like the EGA pin on the scabbard's tip. You have done quite a nice job of researching the Marine that carried this knife  . Tim
sactroop Posted May 7, 2011 Share #11 Posted May 7, 2011 Beauty!! congratulations. Some of my Mark2's have evidence of paint on the pommel. I've been told that there was a purpose in providing a seal from moisture between the tang and pommel. Don't know how true this is.
bayonetman Posted May 8, 2011 Share #12 Posted May 8, 2011 Just the type I like and wish I had it. I also have a 6th Division knife from a local Marine but he did not put his name on it this way. The finish is quite worn on the tip of the blade since he said that he stuck it in the ground beside him when he slept on several occasions. Congratulations on a great find! Theorywolf Posted May 8, 2011 Author Share #13 Posted May 8, 2011 Thanks guys! Actually he wrote in small imprint in cursive form, PFC Wm. P. Rooney, 6th Div. that is almost too light to read but adds to the history. Once I get his wound record I will send off for his full records at St. Louis.
