Help ID-ing Navy Camo patch

Not sure what this is. Any help ID-ing it would be appreciated.

 

Patch is pretty good size. About 4 and 1/4 inches across.

It is for Naval Coastal Warfare...that is a really nice patch. I havent seen one that said that before

I guess that naval Coastal Warfare is the new designation of the former Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Units (MIUWU).

This patch is for a one of these units, can't remember the number at the moment.

Anyway, very nice Special Warfare related pocket patch!

If it is what used to be the MIUW units, it is not really a special warfare unit but more of a harbor security and monitoring unit. Highly important, just not a glamorous.

Still a nice patch none the less.

That is hilarious.

 

In the ten years I served, I never saw one facet of naval service as being glamorous. While attending school at NAB Coronado for a few months, I had the pleasure of watching BUDS training from week one all the way through to my graduation (I was there taking a special warefare class...nothing glamorous...lots of book work). I saw those poor guys every day at the chow hall filthy and exhausted. I watched their full boat crews dwindle down day after day during hell week and saw them carrying the boats over their heads. I saw no glamor. I see no glamor in the actions of ST6, but rather the value and importance of executing a plan (getting OBL) that can go awry at any turn.

 

I apologize if I am coming across negatively...that's not my intent. I see the REMFS as equally important as the front line combat specialists. I do realize that no one really wants to collect items from a Ship's Cook 1st Class petty officer from WWII who served aboard an APA. But I do (my grandfather). I know that under normal duties as a cook, he was...well...cooking chow for the crew. During the landings for various PTO operations, he manned a 40mm anti-aircraft gun and loaded or trained (he did both) as they repelled incoming Kamikaze attackers. Not glamorous, but very important.

 

I know that most of the guys here get the concept of each soldier, sailor, airman and marine plays a vital role in our military...its just that we all lose sight of that when we start opening our wallets to purchase an item or group.

There is nothing negative about being taken to the proverbial woodshed (sorry about the sarcasm) somewere in the later half of my 28 years a Cdr tried to recruit me into the engineering dept of a reserve MIUW. Considering the equipment, duties, watches and typical locations of deployment I opted out. After repairing subs, deploying on destroyers and frigates and teaching damage control among other things it did not sound like my thing as important as the MIUW's job is as is every task that all branches of the service preform.

It was never my intent to trivialize the the MIUW job or insignia ,I am intrigued by both but I still stand on the fact that they are not special forces or spec ops.

Here are some From the Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Unit 102 (MIUWU 102). I believe the patch is a universal patch worn by all Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Units.

I have collected IUWG insignia over the years and thought others would be interested in the variety of stuff I've come across over the years. I don't know how current the below information is but I got it over the Internet:

 

Inshore Undersea Warfare Group

 

Inshore Undersea Warfare One, Western Pacific Detachment (IUWG-1, WestPac Det) established 15 Nov 1966 in Saigon, South Vietnam.

 

The basic Inshore Undersea Warfare Units consisted of Mobile Inshore Undersea Warfare Surveillance Units (MIUWS) and Harbor Patrol Elements.

 

MIUWS 11 and MIUWS 13 were deployed from IUWG-1, Long Beach, California and MIUWS 22 and MIUWS 23 were deployed from IUWG-2, Little Creek, Virginia.

While doing some research I came across this older thread.Nice patches everyone,I have always liked these units and have a few of their patches myself.

I love seeing the army jump wings on that one shirt instead of the naval parachutist badge. I guess he must've been in the army some time?

The Army jump wings were worn until the guy got enough jumps in to qualify for USN/USMC jump wings. SEALs and UDTs commonly wore Army jump wings during VN.

Just saw something a little scary on ebay regarding reproduction insignia specifically an IUWG patch variation that I have been looking for at a reasonable price. I did a double take on the IUWG patch pictured below. I knew it was a copy because it was listed as such and being sold by NCHS (National Capitol Historical Sales) or George Petersen.

Here is the original SVN made IUWG patch. They are pretty close and may have fooled me if I hadn't seen this being sold as a reproduction on eBay. Boy if you really don't know your insignia you can really get taken once a listed reproduction insignia is purchased and exchanges hands a number of times and then sold years later as a original piece by an unscrupulous seller or an uninformed seller.

The backs are different as the copy has a black backing material covering the rear threads while the original does not have a backing material.

Nice patch which I have never come across before and do not have any information regarding Division 6-2. I recently picked up another patch for my collection for Division 5-1 (see photo). So far I have not been able to locate a list of these Division designations anyhere. I have read that the Navy over the years since the SVN War kept changing their designations where they themselves had difficulty keeping up with the changes. In addition it would appear that the US Coast Guard has either taken over one of their functions or augments their port security duties. I spoke to a Coast Guard Reservist Petty Officer who is part of their PSU (Port Security Unit) and asked him about this. He told me that they came about because the Navy (IUWG) was doing such a lousy job of port security that they were forced to step in. I don't know if this is true or not but this is what he told me.
