Civil War Experts! Are these buckles original?

Recommended Posts

These are a friend's ACW buckle and cartridge box plate. Can anybody verify if they are original? I really appreciate it. Thanks!

Here is the cartridge box plate.

Ski,

You know I'm no expert.........but there is a lot of difference between the two back pictures.

The bottom looks right to me!

Whisky Beck

I am not an expert. But I do know the item with the two metal loops on the back is a plate to be afixed to a cartridge box or the like. The item with the three hooks on the back is an infantry waist belt buckle. I do not know enough to say if they are original or repro. Some repros are very well made.

I am a Civil War collector -->

They both look great! The plate with the loops is for a cartridge box. A leather thong would be inserted through the loops, which would hold it to the box flap. The other plate is an enlisted belt plate. One common fault with the reproductions is that the lead is over filled, and forms a dome over the brass edge.

The patina also looks great. If you wish to sell them, shoot me a PM...

Yes, the top one is definately a box plate, here is a picture of one of mine on the box with another picture that shows how it is fastened to the cartridge box.

Here is a fake I have.Best $20 I ever spent..

Notice the puppy paws are rather pointed and sharp.Originals are not.The hook is thinner than originals also and a bit different in shape.

I wont post my box plate as Brad already did.

Hi Ron,

I just wanted to kindly clarify one thing. The "puppy paw" designation is used specifically in reference to the ovular studs, as seen in Brad's picture. These date to pre/early Civil War. The arrow hooks were the second pattern used, and are by far the most common that we encounter.

Even though the example you have is fake, it is one hell of an example. Definitely better quality than most I have seen...

Thanks

I wasnt able to edit it and typed before I posted the picture of the fake. :pinch: I have a belt and buckle of the 2nd pattern and the points are not as pronounced and are a bit blunt(from use??).Never had the opportunity to get one with the paws. They are pretty scarce from what I have been told.If you need the buckle I would sell it :D
