Anybody ever see one of these? Maker marked PWH which was a high volume maker of bayonet scabbards in the 1960's. Since the mid 1950's the US government spec had called for a metal tip protector and the consensus of opinion among collectors is PWH had no contracts that early. Only known post WW2 maker fo the M8A1 that did not have the tip protector was the 1953 contract by Victory Plastics. So what the heck is this?

Since I posted this topic I've heard of others made by PWH and lacking the metal tip protector. And I heard of one in which the lanyard hole had a grommet. So I don't believe it's just a factory screw up.

Here´s the pic of the one with the grommet only, that Greg refers to. It belongs to a collector in Austria whom I am trying to help to get more info on the, most probably reworked/overhauled, M4 bayonet in a PWH scabbard. I don´t know when scabbard and bayonet were joined, but presume at a later date.
