RARE 1930's USN AVIATION TAN UNIFORM to Naval Aviator

This jacket is only the 2nd one I have ever seen in 30 years of collecting.

The Black mohair sleeve stripes and black buttons for the khaki blouse were discontinued with an April 1941 change to uniform regulations. The sleeve stripes were replaced with shoulder boards and the buttons were changed from black to gold. It would have been very simple to have the stripes and shoulder straps removed and loops set for shoulder boards added. The buttons are removeable and would have been swapped. Most were probably altered and that is why I am assuming these are scarce.

Ive seen a lot more M-42 Jump Jackets ;)

Here are a couple of photos of them being worn in the 1920-s and 30's

Wonderful! Closest I've ever come to seeing one "in the flesh." Also authorized in 1931 for submarine officers, with trousers and black shoes. Aviation officers could wear either trousers or breeches till 1937.

Thanks for sharing!

OH my, very nice. I have a 1933 dress blue jumper in mint condition with a AMM2/c crow that I stumbled on that the seller thought was just another Navy shirt

bringing this back up

And I'm glad you did because it's awesome. Still looking for a named one, preferably with the submarine officer's period dolphins still attached.

Apparently the black braid stripes didn't look too great after washing, so in 1941 after they were authorized for all officers, the shoulder boards and gold buttons were required, giving some interchangeability with the dress whites.

Still a great uniform to see!
