Kman1752 Posted April 2, 2011 Share #1 Posted April 2, 2011 Just got this in today's mail, very nice WWI Tunic with 13th Engineer patch. Seller said these patches are fairly rare, what do you think? Only flaw I see with the uniform is one of the hooks on the collar is missing. If anyone has a "junk" WWI tunic they would sell me, or if you have one of these hooks for some reason, please pm me. It could just be (and I am just speculating now) an added disk to replace a missing one, the soldier's former unit and he just decided he liked it better or the soldier thought it could stand for 3rd Battaion of the 13th Engineers. As I had mentioned when you purchased, this came from a picker friend of mine. We used to work together and now he has retired but is running auctions for storage units and looking for garage sales estate sale, etc. He always watches out for military items for me. About 4 years ago, he picked this one up exactly as you see it. Unfortunately, he also does ebay, so he knows the value generally speaking of some of these, and because we are friends, I always make him a fair offer. I passed this on to you for about what I had in it. I would have hung onto it, but have been investing rather aggressively in early USMC items. So that's the story-and I know everyone has a story, but I always tell the truth. Hope you enjoy this tunic, if a disc was replaced, I can assure you it was done by the soldier as I was the first collector of this nice tunic. I think it was a major dealer in Montana that listed a tunic with this patch last year for $350 stating it was tough to find. When I bought it, I offered what most WWI tunics (other than 2nd division, USMC or rare units) go for, as I wasnt familiar with this patch at the time. I like this forum much better than the one you acquired the uniform from. Migrating more and more to US items, and this forum is definately the way to go. The "3 F" Engineer disk is as correct as a 'US 13" disk on this uniform; although it is a bit unusual. What people often do not know, is that most of these (11-19th) Engineer Regiments were authorized as 'Reserve' regiments numbered 1-9. Shortly before the units shipped out for France in 1917, they were re-designated to avoid confusion with the contemporary 'Regular' regiments also numbered 1-9. So what you have is a disk that was worn by someone who was probably assigned to the 3rd Reserve Engineers, Company F (later known as the 13th Engineers) in 1917, and served with them until they came home. Of course the caveat is that the disk could also have been used by other units too, so the details are important in figuring out which unit it truly refers to. In this case, it is without a doubt the 3rd Reserve Engineers; 13th Engineers (Railway). I do want to emphasize that the usage of the '3 F' disk is acceptable, but one should not expect it to be on such a uniform. It is more of a 'acceptable anomaly', and the majority of uniforms should have the proper designated disk (13) or a plain (US). When it comes to disks, a lot of different combinations were used in the WWI period. So don't think all 13th uniforms should have it, but don't forget that the 'regular' 3rd Engineers could have worn it too. RC Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
