15th Separate Bn: USMC (WW1)

Wanted to let you guys know my new article on the 15th Separate Bn (USMC) just came out in Bender Pushlishing's Military Advisor magazine. It took quite some time to put together but I was very pleased with the finished product. This is a subject that (until know) there has been very little written on. Even the Marine Corps has almost no information on them (just half of a paragraph in a 1981 Marine Corps Gazette magazine). In fact, they (USMC Historical Reference Branch) wrote and asked me for a copy as soon as it comes out (I will send them one tomorrow...)

Just wanted to let you know. I hope some of you will enjoy it.

Thanks

EQ

Eric this looks outstanding! Congrads on your publication. I can't wait to read it, I know you must have worked hard on this, thank you for advancing this history so we can all learn about it.

Semper Fi,

Kevin

Thanks guys for the orders.

One thing I did want to share though, for those who may not know, is that the Military Advisor is really a magazine for collectors, by collectors. The collectors/historians who contribute the material really do so as a labor of love. The contributors do not get paid anything for the work and have no financial stake in how many are sold. Bender pretty much just covers the cost of the layout and printing with the magazine sales.

I just wanted to mention it to assure everyone that Iam not trying to "sell" the magazine here for profit. My only motivation is that the information get out there and hopefully someone will enjoy reading it.

That said, I encourage everyone to put together similar articles on subjects they are passionate about and submit them for publication consideration. The more information that's available, the more we all benefit.

Thanks

EQ

I never saw that helmet before-would not have recognized it for what it was. Bay State just sold one last week.

Someone got a great deal..........

Obviously not the 5th Brigade HQ. The HQ insignia was round.

I just received this from a gentleman whose father served with the unit. Was nice to hear that someone found the information usefull.

Hi Eric:

Thank you so much for your brilliant article on Mission 536 and the 15th Separate Battalion (US Marines). My father, Roy M. Hodges, was a 19 year old Private who was transferred into service in Company "A" of the 15th Separate Battalion from Company "B" of the 12th Separate Battalion on July 24th, 1919. All of the elements you describe from the end of July 1919 until the discharge on December 30, 1919 were just as reflected in my father's service record, which I obtained a few years ago. I had always wondered why his length of service was so short and what their mission was. Your article explained it perfectly, and I'm sincerely grateful for the information.

I picked up my copy and have read it a couple of times. Lots of good information about this obscure unit of Marines. I really enjoyed the article, period photos and the photos of the artifacts. It is a great article and I'm sure well worth the effort to put it together. Thanks for putting it together Eric and Bob!

Is this article still available?

I just created a profile on an Indiana Marine (Pvt Norman Paul Maxwell) who was in this unit and I am looking for info and a unit insignia.

Yes, I would contact the publisher (Bender). You should be able to buy a copy for around 6 bucks. He had a couple left the last time I spoke with him.

USMC-RECON0321

Just wanted to update this thread. After recently aquiring one of these rare helmets and starting some research on the unit, I came accross this thread which was started in 2011 and thinking how I would love to still get my hands on one of these magazines. Anyway, taking a long shot, I just got off the phone with Bender Publishing out in Ca. (408) 225-5777 and was surprised the guy answered the phone right away and informed me they still have 5 copies on the shelf and possible a few more in storage. I ordered two copies for myself ($6.00 ea), but thought I would let others know there are still some copies left and no plans to print any more. So if you want one, I wouldn't wait.

Thanks
Troy
