seanmc1114 Posted April 30, 2016 Share #626 Posted April 30, 2016 Unknown scroll tab worn by a Korean War era member of the 40th Infantry Division. It may be "Ball Of Fire" but doesn't look like others I have seen, I can't make out the DUI. https://army.togetherweserved.com/army/servlet/tws.webapp.WebApp?cmd=Profile&type=Person&ID=347871
firefighter Posted April 30, 2016 Share #627 Posted April 30, 2016 The 40th ID looks theater made, just something about it. Cool pic.
patches Posted April 30, 2016 Share #628 Posted April 30, 2016 As odd as it sounds, that DI looks like the 223rd Armored Infantry Battalion, foto could be taken in 1954, during the transition from the 40th Infantry Division to the 40th Armored Division? tredhed2 Posted April 30, 2016 Share #629 Posted April 30, 2016 The DI is for the 223rd IR, prior to it being redesignated AIB. You're correct, the tab appears to be one of the generic div Korea tabs, like this:
patches Posted May 1, 2016 Share #630 Posted May 1, 2016 The DI is for the 223rd IR, prior to it being redesignated AIB. You're correct, the tab appears to be one of the generic div Korea tabs, like this: Is it the same DI, this 223rd Inf as for the 223rd AIB? Must be right, as this one below is presumably the official DI for the 223rd AIB. That one being worn by the GI in foto, and the original example I posted must of been an unauthorized one and more than likely adopted locally late in the Korean War, and worn for a while longer in the 223rd Inf when the 40th Div returned to California State control and was redesignated as the 40th Armd Div in 1954. Description A silver color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86cm) in height overall consisting of a shield blazoned: Per bend Argent and Azure, a fleur-de-lis, in Dexter chief counterchanged, above in Dexter base a sea lion holding in its Dexter paw a sword palewise of the second and in sinister chief a Korean bell of the second garnished white. Attached below the shield is a silver scroll inscribed "SIEMPRE ADELANTE". Symbolism The service of the former organization, the 223d Armored Infantry Battalion, is indicated by the colors blue and white which represents Infantry. The fleur-de-lis, taken from the canton of the 185th Infantry Regiment, alludes to the descent of the 223d Armored Infantry Battalion from the 2d Battalion of that organization and also symbolizes the battalion’s World War I service. The sea lion represent service in the Philippines during World War II. The bell, for which Korea is noted, is for service in that country during that conflict. Background The insignia was originally approved for the 223d Armored Infantry Battalion on 13 Jun 1956. It was rescinded on 5 Jul 1961. On 29 Oct 1997 the description and symbolism was revised and authorized for the 223d Regiment.

sigma9r Posted May 27, 2016 Share #641 Posted May 27, 2016 This is an interesting modern group of tabs from Iraq and Afghanistan. They are all veteran bring backs, a mixture of uniform removed and morale patches but all from the middle east theater. My favorite is the "Dig Deep" which was combat warn and I have never seen another like it. The Powerpoint tab is an all-time favorite just because of the amount of Powerpoint presentations at 3rd Army...the general did NOT appreciate the tank that drove across the screen on my first PP slide!
