I found this Disney designed patch and ring for the 21st Bombardment Squadron on eBay many years ago. The ring is beautifully done in cloisonne and got me started collecting WW2 rings. It's still the nicest one I own!

Love that ring Adam!

This design was created at the Disney Studio in January 1942.

I have a copy of a b/w photo showing a serviceman sitting in a jeep, with the patch clearly visible on his jacket. I'll look for it later and will post the image when I find it.

Dave,

Thanks for posting your picture.

One of the things I like about this patch is its unusual shape. Your man seems to have it applied to a round base before it was put on the jacket. Can't be too many like that!

I have seen the 21st in the "Disney Dons Dogtags" with the box under the bee w/stars numbering 2 & 1 , wonder why this was dropped off from "original" art ??????

Disney artist Hank Porter frequently added symbols to his designs to indicate the unit's designation. And in the case of the USS Wasp, he even added seven waves to the design in homage to the prior USS Wasp CV-7. The studio received an edict from the government banning the use of any identifier in a design, but it seems Porter ignored that edict on many occasions. I would presume the C.O. of many units had the identifier on their particular design removed so they wouldn't get in trouble form the higher-ups, or, if captured, the design wouldn't give away info to the enemy.

I cover this topic in the insignia chapter of my book: Service With Character. The Disney Studio and World War II. The book is available on Amazon in print and e-book formats. The e-book has images, the print version does not as Disney would not grant me permission to use the photos in the print version.
