loudoun Posted February 12, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 12, 2011 I picked this up nearly thirty years ago and was told it was a field map case used in the Civil War. It appears to be made of tin. Any opinions?
DesertRatTom Posted February 13, 2011 Share #2 Posted February 13, 2011 I picked this up nearly thirty years ago and was told it was a field map case used in the Civil War. It appears to be made of tin. Any opinions? It is quite possibly a map or pass case. From the photo it looks like the interior has been galvanized, if so then IW or later. CW would be 'tinned' at best, or original metal that had been buffed (polished) originally. Check Lord's Civil War Equipment, V. I for details.Tom
loudoun Posted February 13, 2011 Author Share #3 Posted February 13, 2011 Tom Here is a pic of the inside. It looks to have a polished look. I am a WWII collector, so I do not have that reference.
Patriot Posted February 13, 2011 Share #4 Posted February 13, 2011 A picture of the seam where the bottom of the case meets the body, as well as any other seams will help determine age quite a bit. Speaking as a Civil War collector, that green finish does not strike me as Civil War - but I'd like to see the seam before I can render an opinion.
