kbulow Posted February 5, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 5, 2011 Hi all, This very nice grouping to Colonel Leydecker came up for sale on E-Bay a few weeks ago in January, did a forum member purchase this grouping? The seller states in the listing medals are named on the rear, I assume he means the LoM and BS. http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi...em=250754968934 Or does anybody now where the group currently is? kbulow Posted February 5, 2011 Author Share #2 Posted February 5, 2011 Hi All, Just looked at this E-Bay listing again and I got it wrong the medals are all un-named but all the paperwork is orginal, I suppose people are wondering where I'm going with this. On a side line I like collecting American named medals, and I like the Legion of Merit, I have always thought it was attractive. I have'nt recieved it yet but I have just won this E-Bay auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...2RXBf2k7HY%253D It looks correctly named, can I have your thoughts please Kerry
Jack's Son Posted February 5, 2011 Share #3 Posted February 5, 2011 Which is it Kerry, You DON'T know where Col. Leydeckers medals are..........OR You bought them and want an opinion about the authenticity of the engraving ??
kbulow Posted February 5, 2011 Author Share #4 Posted February 5, 2011 Which is it Kerry,You DON'T know where Col. Leydeckers medals are..........OR You bought them and want an opinion about the authenticity of the engraving ?? Sorry I must have confused things, the FIRST E-Bay listing is all Col Leydeckers paperwork, photos and un-named medals, I DID NOT BID ON THESE. This E-Bay auction closed in Jan this year and I presume was purchased by someone in the US as the seller did'nt post worldwide. This SECOND E-Bay listing is by a different US E-Bay dealer, as per the link it only just closed last week and is Col Charles E Leydeckers SINGLE NAMED Legion of Merit, this is the auction I won. After looking on the internet for reseach on this Officer (while waiting for it to arrive) I came across the listing of all his paperwork, photos and un-named medals. I suppose my question is, is my LoM named correctly. It appears to be the same as other WW2 ones I've seen? Also is it possible the first seller added the un-named medals to the orignal paperwork and photos to make it more attractive? It just seems odd that all the medals with the orginal paperwork are un-named but his named medals are now appearing on E-Bay? Kerry
Jack's Son Posted February 5, 2011 Share #5 Posted February 5, 2011 Your thoughts are correct, at least one of the estate sale pickers didn't know enough to purchase both the medals AND the certificates. Now the grouping is split and not worth its potential value. The Medal is hand engraved in a proper WWII style. Although I don't recognize the hand, it has the appearance of being "Official". I would like other to weigh in and support my thinking. If I were you, I would be happy with my purchase. JS
Kadet Posted February 5, 2011 Share #6 Posted February 5, 2011 Both of these auctions came out of the Naples/Ft Meyers area of SW Florida here in the states. My guess is that he passed away in FL, and these items were out of his estate. His stuff may have ended up w/ different estate liquidators.. kbulow Posted February 5, 2011 Author Share #7 Posted February 5, 2011 Thanks for this information, its a shame that a lot of really nice US groups get split this way. I fill sorry for the first guy who payed quite a large sum for the grouping. Also I have another question in the first E-Bay listing the EAME medal has 2 silver stars, what does that mean? I know he was entitled to 4 Bronze ones. Anyway I'm very happy with the LoM and do think its orignal, I'll post better photo's of the naming when it arrives. tzm293 Posted January 10, 2019 Share #8 Posted January 10, 2019 Hi everyone, I am Col. Leydeckers' great niece. He did indeed pass away near Naples, FL. I was told his medals were donated to a museum, as I'd asked for one/some upon learning of his passing - we spent hours and hours of my childhood with him showing me his medals and telling me stories about why he received them (also watching lots and lots of MASH reruns). It kills me that the medals seemed to have ended up being sold as opposed to donated as I was told. This is the only place on the 'net I've found mention of them - I just wanted to put it out there that if anyone would be willing to sell any medal of his they have received, I would be very, very interested. I not sure what fair market value is for such things, but please reach out to me to discuss if you're interested. He passed about 20 years ago, and I would dearly love to have something to remember him by (in addition to my beautiful memories). Thank you for your time. Best, Shannon
Brig Posted January 11, 2019 Share #9 Posted January 11, 2019 Unfortunately, when you donate to a museum you leave them free to sell to fund their museum's costs...loaning is the surest way to ensure they don't disappear onto the market
tzm293 Posted January 11, 2019 Share #10 Posted January 11, 2019 Thank you Brig, I appreciate that information. It's helpful to think that maybe they didn't lie to me about donating the medals. I guess I'll hope that someone is willing to sell someday, sees this, and gets in touch. If not, oh well... Memories are more important than things. 12A54 Posted January 11, 2019 Share #11 Posted January 11, 2019 Memories are more important than things. As an alternative, you could replace his medals with older originals from members here, eBay, or even with new strikes from Vanguard or other manufacturers. This would represent his service and if/when the originals ever turned up you could easily sell the temporary ones or share them with other family members who might also like to remember him. (Older examples would be easier to resell.)
